Schizophrenia Spectrum and Psychotic Disorders

Treating psychosis in the geriatric population can be challenging as it is important to understand the cause of the psychosis.

It is not unusual to have patients with psychotic episodes due to medical conditions. A common example is a Urinary Tract Infection causing hallucinations.

Other causes of psychosis include side effects of medication or symptoms of a neurocognitive disorder (Dementia).

Through assessment it is very important to have the correct diagnosis to effectively treat the symptoms.
