In serving our senior population there is something that it is very important to keep in mind when it comes to treatment: “Doing less is better”!
The challenge in psychiatric treatment is to understand that there can be many non-psychiatric medications being prescribed or different physical illnesses that can develop psychiatric symptoms. Under these circumstances, it is of key value to consider coordinating care with Primary Care Physicians for either changing or stopping prescribed medications, or to address physical illness issues as these interventions can solve the symptoms.
At JNC we are very conservative on the treatment approach as senior population end up being prescribed “many medications” that can cause or worsen their psychiatric symptoms. Beyond figuring out the best psychiatric medication, what really matters, is to reduce the exposure to “polypharmacy”. As part of our treatments, we heavily rely on Psychotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Physical Therapy, Neurologist, and Primary Doctors.
The patients and their families are the most important part of the treatment plan. We are here to help you find different options and solutions.
